Outdoor enthusiast. Hiking for the challenge, the thrill, the adventure. Looking to figure it all out. This is really just a personal journey, but thought some people would want to get involved and this is a good way to give back. I figured ... more

VT - Mile 1651 - Jul 23rd, 2015

3 Quarters
Day 115
Mile 1651
5:30am
75% of the trail completed.
I'm in Manchester Center, VT. All is well. I took a zero yesterday, after 24 and 21 mile days Monday and Tuesday. It is my first zero in July. I went on a heck of a run of 20 mile days. Put myself right where I want to be. I was at mile 1630 by the end of the 16th week. Finally hit my goal! I rewarded myself by drinking a few cold beers outside the Price Chopper. I ate pretty well, rehydrated, resupplied my food, did my laundry (still have my cellphone) and will be headed out, back to the trail in a bit. Manchester is a great little town. All of Vermont is gorgeous. Please see pics below. The low at night is around 50 degrees and highs near 80. Almost perfect weather. The trail is a bit muddy and a bit overgrown. It is not simple, but not difficult and can still yield some big days. I want to press hard for one more week. Need a bit bigger of a buffer-zone. I have been told that my mileage and pace will be cut in half in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
I have seen moose tracks, moose scat and moose rubs. I will see a moose soon...
The mosquitoes have almost disappeared. They seem very spot specific.
Two Dogs, Rocky Mtn High and a bunch of others are just a day or two behind me.
I still don't have a tent or hammock. I bought a Sawyer water filter and sent my heavy water pump home. My pack with 2 days food is less than 25 lbs.
My body is in great shape. I have probably never been in such good shape. I feel young and youthful. I have probably lost 35lbs and weigh less now, with a pack on, than when I started, without a pack. Pretty crazy to think I started the AT with an extra 55lbs on my person. That makes me think the hardest days are behind me.
I should be in Killington, VT by Saturday and should make New Hampshire by Tuesday.
After that, mileage no longer matters. Just have to take what the mountains give us. Hopefully there are sunny days ahead. Should finally be getting some good pictures again. We haven't been above 4000 ft elevation since southern Virginia.
I'm excited and nervous to see how all of this will unfold.

I am amazed by your journey! Your writing logs make for great reading...I see wonderful fodder for an article in OUTSIDE. I just read a stat: Each year, thousands of hikers attempt a thru-hike; only about one in four make it all the way. I totally believe, heart and soul, that you will make it...and write about it later. Enjoy your adventure! Erica and the Zoo
