Outdoor enthusiast. Hiking for the challenge, the thrill, the adventure. Looking to figure it all out. This is really just a personal journey, but thought some people would want to get involved and this is a good way to give back. I figured ... more

Day 37

- Mile ??? - May 10th, 2015

Day 37
Happy to have dusted Damascus. I don't know why, but I didn't care for Damascus at all. They didn't seem to like the hiker community. The town is totally spread out and disoriented. No restaurants, bars or anything. Just churches and a Subway. Crazy, I thought it was going to be like Hot Springs, NC... Boy was I wrong. I'm bailing on Trail Days also. Just wasn't for me. Maybe next year. Anyways, got my resupply today and got 17 miles up the trail. My miles since my zero at Kincora were 14 miles (double trail magic, both with alcohol), 22 miles and 16 miles to get into Damascus, VA.
I bought a new pair of hiking shoes this a.m. They are already doing wonders. I probably should have bought a pair earlier, but it's hard to find an outfitter out here.
Trail has been pretty quiet. A couple snakes, a deer. Had a good thunderstorm today. Tennessee was an absolute breeze. Easiest miles we've seen yet. After I tackle Mt. Rogers tomorrow, things should go smoother from here on out. Hope to make 15 plus miles per day.
It has finally warmed up. The days have been gorgeous. We beat the cold and I will be sending some cold weather gear home. Very happy to lighten the pack.
Got a few shots of the last few days including a salamander below.
Rafiki, my thinking stick has picked up some feathers and continues to be a good ear to talk to. He comes up clutch every time I slip, roll an ankle or stub my nubs.
I'm excited to get a bit further north and see some friends and family on/off the trail.
Wishing my brother the best on his new adventure.
Can't wait to have my first Nephew as well. Looking forward to a beach trip as soon as this thing is over. I miss the ocean already.
There are times out here where all I can do is think... The mind and memory just start racing. Certain smells, songs, tastes or thoughts just trigger a strong memory. Times when I think about my life. My family, friends, Jumbie. The things that I value in my life. My direction. Makes me feel pretty damn special. Like George Bailey in "It's A Wonderful Life." Except I got out of Bedford Falls and got to see the world.
I'm very confident that I will finish this trip and never look back. What's next is already beginning to creep into my subconscious...
But that's how it goes.
For now, I will stay motivated and continue pushing North.
Enjoying every moment.

I am amazed by your journey! Your writing logs make for great reading...I see wonderful fodder for an article in OUTSIDE. I just read a stat: Each year, thousands of hikers attempt a thru-hike; only about one in four make it all the way. I totally believe, heart and soul, that you will make it...and write about it later. Enjoy your adventure! Erica and the Zoo
