Day 52

- Mile 690 - May 22nd, 2015

Sitting at shelter while the rain is heaviest. Just south of Dragon's Tooth. I'm going to alter my plans a bit, but still plan to eat tonight at The Homeplace, in Catawba. An all you can eat, country style restaurant, probably the best food on the trail.
Blacksburg was incredible. I'm happy to say I didn't drink too much, came away un-injured and didn't get arrested... I slept in some questionable spots, but came out alive.
Great to see my dog. The old folks as well. I ate at nearly every restaurant in town. Felt a lot like home.
I got 9 miles in Monday evening and went big Tuesday, for 26. 18 yesterday (long, hard day), and should get about 15 by days end today. I should be at mile 698 by tonight.
Onward and Upward. Have nearly completed 1/3 of the trail length.
Amazingly, I'm nearly out of food and need to do laundry. It's a good day for a hostel, as its been raining for a few hours and most of my clothes are on my back and wet... The problems of going ultra-light. Well, light for me.
Speaking of shedding lbs, I had lost 31 pounds since I began. Was at 181 about a week ago. After Blacksburg and a couple days out here, I'd say its about right. Crazy how the weight just disappears. I was heavy to start, but I need to start hanging on to the weight I have. My appetite has been big, since I got back on. A man just offered me a cup of hot instant coffee... I accept.
Side note: Nolan Griffin was my first Nephew. That kid is gonna be a celebrity. Just like his folks.

I am amazed by your journey! Your writing logs make for great reading...I see wonderful fodder for an article in OUTSIDE. I just read a stat: Each year, thousands of hikers attempt a thru-hike; only about one in four make it all the way.
