Trail: Appalachian Trail     Goal: 2190 Miles
Dates: Mar 16 2017 - Aug 18 2017
As you see, I don't have a trail name (yet)... I thought about hiking the AT 20 years ago but it wasn't the right time. Now that I have the time, we'll see how my body will hold up. I have my own reasons driving me but it would be nice to help ... more

Distracted

West Mountain Shelter - Mile 1397 - Jun 23rd, 2017

6/23 - wow... seems like it's been forever since I posted. There have been many distractions so I have to go back to see where I left off! --- so falls 5,6 and 7... five and six were both on the wet rocks in Pennsylvania less than 3 minutes apart - and on the same bone above my left butt cheek 😳--- the 1st one hurt... the 2nd one really hurt! Seven was today... going down hill and my feet just slid across the Little Rock's ... unfortunately my right wrist took the entire weight of the fall as it bent backwards... I sat on the hill for a while and let the sweat dry as the pain subsided. My legs are getting tired ... my mind equally so. New York has definitely brought some challenges. The rock climbs are unique and strenuous (dangerous and fun 🤗). Tonight there is 70 % chance of rain so I'm in a shelter (no wet tent) with a view looking down on the Hudson River and across to the New York City skyline 30 miles to the East --- pretty nice view for free - ? - well it'll cost you a little sweat to get up here. Distraction... so this aspiring travel blogger/writer found out I was hiking the AT - she and a friend want to hike it next year - and asks if she can hike a couple of days with me to get some experience... flattering... she says she is an avid trail runner and 10K runner and feels 15 mile days would work if that's okay... well, trail running- 10Ks - whatever activity people may do... hiking the AT is different - 15 miles wasn't happening... neither was 10 - once she put that pack on we were lucky to do 6 - but I give her an A+ for trying! We hiked all day long - two days in a row - she struggled but she didn't quit - and she was awed by the challenge, the scenery and the people... I don't know if she will end up hiking next year or not but she got a real lesson on what it's like. I learned a few things too. I can be empathic, supportive, kind and encouraging--- it was difficult for me in many ways to watch as she struggled along - but I hope I never let it show ... i could have been many miles further along - so was it worth it ? - You bet! I hope I showed the characteristics of the better man I strive to be!

OK --- excuse me for interjecting, but I must say that each and every day brings a fresh beginning in every walk of life. New mercies every morning. Trey, I don't even know you - just met you once briefly, but the past is in the past, and it does not mold our futures. Forge ahead, my friend, forge ahead. Who knows what the day may bring? We all have regret, sorrows, trials and tribulations, but we also have abundant blessings and reassurance. Keep the faith, be courageous, and stand strong as your travel onward. I think I am hooked on following your path and reading your journals! Have a great weekend, and I hope you have pleasant weather!

I hope you did your 2016 taxes...today is the day to file. Be glad you're in the wild, not putting up with city life. Hope you're not on your back like a turtle, again. Enjoy your time and warmer weather is becoming more consistent as you approach May. Good luck, brother.

Yes- I thought the same thing during Church!!! I don't believe it's a coincidence. I believe it's a blessing and a reassuring sign. When daddy had his brain surgery, he was sent to recover in room 316! His nurse's name happened to be Angel. Daddy and I spoke of such reassurance from God. It's not that I don't want you to go; rather we will miss you. However the worry and apprehension is lessened because of our faith! John 3:16
