Day 5-8
Carter Gap Shelter - Mile 93.9 - Jan 20th, 2017
Day 5-8
On the trail I am officially Babyface and so far as I've introduced I get a chuckle but the trail name is self explanatory. Day 5 took me, my hiking buddy Turtle, and his dog Pongo to the small town of Hiawassee, GA. A man named Richard shuttled us to town from Unicoi Gap (11 miles off the trail). As soon as we got to town we checked in at Budget Inn, dropped my laundry off, and rocking my rain paints and fleece I raced to Taco Bell for some lunch. After lunch, I finished my laundry and took a much needed shower (you can probably tell what my priorities are). The rest of the day was spent enjoying some craft brew at Bacchus, resupplying at a grocery store called Ingles (where I chatted up a man named Franklin who used to be in the Army in the 50s!), and stuffing my face in a buffet for dinner. Day 6 we were back on the trail and back to putting on more miles. Day 7 on the way to our next shelter, I stopped by at the Top of Georgia Hostel where I was welcomed with Hot Cocoa and some tips and stories from owner Triple Crowner Sir-Packs-A lot. I pick up my mail drop sent by Mom (thank you!) and push on. Day 7 is a momentous occasion as I passed the GA/NC border and I was officially one state closer to the end! However, NC welcomed us with 3 steep mountain climbs before we could end the day. Luckily, today (day 8) was much more easier which gave use a much needed "rest" day as we tackle Albert Mountain tomorrow. Next town stop is Franklin, NC where I'll be looking for some cold brew at Lazy Hiker Brewery.
