See Bottom for TLDR
If our generation is marked by anything, I believe that thing is a desire for purpose. As a generation, we have just recently passed the point where we make up the majority of the workforce. I have met a lot of good people who are eager to be activists but find that the process of surviving takes up far too much time to dedicate extra energy to charity. Many of us are growing weary of swimming in circles but find the structures of society frustratingly sluggish and difficult to move through. Many of the incentives to work entry-level jobs no longer exist as baby boomers hold their positions and middle management remains clogged. Some say our generation doesn’t want to work, but I don’t think that’s correct. We want to work but on something that makes sense to us. We want to be a part of something that can grow with our input and return real and visible positive benefit upon the world around us. Be it of the environmental or social capacity or otherwise, I believe my generation has a strong drive to express itself upon a process of positivity and growth. Most of us want to improve the world and most of us want to improve ourselves. I hope that I am correct in this assumption as it is the basis of my project.
My name is Daniel Garnes and I want to run across america. I wrote this down roughly 4 months ago after watching the film Forest Gump for the first time in my adult life. I am twenty five years old. I had been going stir-crazy in the city and the idea of running across the country seemed so simple and true. After giving it some thought however I realized that the movie portrayed an impossible task as the man had no preparations and carried zero equipment across great lengths of open territory. As an experiment I decided to run 20 miles in a day. I have been an active runner for almost 3 years, but almost never more than 10 miles at a time. I live in Seattle and the terrain is largely composed of hills paved over in concrete. The run was hard on the knees, and I effectively disabled myself for a month. Running across America would prove difficult at this pace as our country is roughly 2700 miles across (as the crow flies). I began to reign in this idea into a more accomplish-able task. Starting late March of next year I, and a good friend of mine named Brian Clayton-Dye, will begin to treck the Pacific Crest Trail. This trail extends from Mexico to Canada and is 2,663 mi in length. We will be walking, with all necessary equipment upon our person - and we will be documenting the experience.
>:O < IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU’RE JUST GOING ON VACAY! HOW DO YOU PLAN ON CONTRIBUTING TO SOCIETY!??!)
That is why I am creating this website. Through this website I will be asking, not for sponsorship, but simply for charitable donations to the Pacific Crest Trail Association. I will be contacting the manufacturers and distributors of the equipment that I am using, and promoting a crowdsourcing tool to raise money for the PCTA. Donators will be publicized on this website along with my pictures, stories, blogs, thoughts, yearnings, etc. I plan to put it all on the table. If you have enjoyed this small section of my writing, I encourage you to follow this concept as even your attention will help to legitimize this process. Right now we are proving the concept. Once this task is accomplished, this project may grow into a fully formed non-profit organization focused on legitimizing and promoting the outlet of a temporary and purposeful state of transience. This is the beginning of Charitable Nomads.
TLDR: I am starting a small organization centered on the goal of contributing to society through a temporary state of transience. Think this is a cool idea? Please share :) less

From shore to shore, we champion the needs of the Pacific Crest Trail. We are an eclectic band of trail junkies, for sure. But we are so much more. We are dedicated to the notion that our hard work to protect, preserve and promote this National Scenic Trail is a precious gift to future generations. We are the Pacific Crest Trail. less
