DASH: Hi! My name is George Ma, and I am a rising junior. Growing up, I participated in many sports such as soccer, football, and track. My largest passion, however, has always been and still is being outside. Whether it be backpacking, trail-running, or mountain biking, the feeling which I get when I am on a trail is unlike anything else. I have been backpacking for a long time now, and I have backpacked in over 7 different states and over 3 different countries. Recently, I realized that my passion for hiking could actually be used to make a difference in the world, and I did not hesitate and decided immediately that I was going to do something......................................................... Being an active volunteer, I have always enjoyed and cherished helping others and the environment. Volunteering I participate on in a regular basis include working with a watershed institution, a non-profit organization focused on maintaining and restoring a clean and healthy environment. Additionally, on my sophomore winter break, I volunteered in a hospital which focused primarily on cancers such as Lymphoma and Myeloma, opening my eyes to and changing my perspective of life and the world for the better. At the hospital, I developed connections with patients as well as learned about these cancers and their treatments.......................................................... When deciding on which nonprofit organization I would dedicate my Appalachian hike to, I remembered the many patients and families at the hospital and chose the Cancer Research Institute. FLASH: Hi, my Name is Amon DeVane, and for as long as I can remember, I have loved backpacking. My parents have been big backpackers since long before I was born, so backpacking has been a part of my life since I was very young. I have been backpacking in many different places: California along the stunning Sierra Nevada, the Everest region of Nepal, in the goat rock wilderness in Washington, and on the Appalachian trail in New Jersy, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. Backpacking allows me to get away from my often boring and stressful l life and just focus on putting one foot in front of the other. Moreover, it gives me the opportunity to enjoy the beauties which nature has to offer. On the two backpacking trips that George and I have been on in the past years, we have had an amazing time backpacking together. We work very well together, and I look forward to this 500+ mile trek. ...................................................................... When George came to me with the idea of hiking for a cause, I was delighted that he had thought of that. It is a wonderful idea and I think that it is excellent way for us to channel our passions to help others and make a difference. George said that I could choose a charity that I wanted half the earnings to go to, but after doing a large amount of research on The Cancer Research Institute, it seems like a great organization that does a good job of progressing the fight against cancer, so I decided that it would be great to have 100% of our raised money to go to The Cancer Research Institute. less
