We, (Jed, Jeru, Julie, and Jeff, left to right) are hiking the John Muir Trail on a thru-hike this summer. Jeru, who is graduating, told us that she wanted to do the John Muir Trail as part of her High School Graduation "sendoff" so Julie, Jed, and me will be joining her on the JMT. The more we thought about this the more we realized we wanted to celebrate her academic milestone by hiking for someone else to have an educational opportunity. We landed on Oasis Africa and Drs Gershon and Gladys Mwiti's work with the Mashaka kids of Mashaka slums, Meru, four hours away from the city of Nairobi in Kenya.
We hope that this hike will bring awareness and financial support for hundreds of orphaned children who due to AIDS, child labor, and early prostitution are without any educational opportunities. Oasis Africa and the Centre for the Mashaka Children provide housing, food, and education for the kids in the Mashaka slums. less

In our commitment to community outreach, in October 2007, Oasis Africa opened an Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) project: The Mashaka Children's Center in Meru District. Mashaka, is a rural slum area within Meru, about four hundred kilometers from Nairobi.
Most of the children in Mashaka live with child labor, early prostitution and teenage pregnancy, child abandonment, and HIV/AIDS. Some of the children in our project are orphans who were abandoned as newborn babies, rescued and taken care of by nuns in Catholic shelter and turned back into the community in young childhood. The cycle of abuse and neglect continues. less
