Outdoor enthusiast. Hiking for the challenge, the thrill, the adventure. Looking to figure it all out. This is really just a personal journey, but thought some people would want to get involved and this is a good way to give back. I figured ... more

Day 31

- Mile ??? - May 3rd, 2015

Day 31
Mile 403
Destiny is still at my side.
Timing is everything. It's raining currently, but the last couple of days have been nice. Day 29 brought me to a moment I've been searching endlessly for. After picking up thousands of chipped rocks and old pieces of rubble I finally found a real beauty. See below. This is the best arrowhead I have ever found. It was 3 inches from the trail just south of Roan Mountain, TN. It really made my day. Made the week. The trip.
Of all the cultures in this world, the Native Americans stole my heart. I have been fascinated with their lifestyle my whole life. I think I would have made a good Indian. Native American.
I finally crossed the official NC/TN state line and am headed to Virginia. Mama, I'm coming home! Well, sort of. More like passing by.
Everything is great. My feet hurting a bit, but I can cope.
I had some tough days after Erwin, but still made good miles. Just had some troubles getting going and staying motivated... But then I remembered music. I downloaded some new stuff that hit the spot. It rejuvenated my spirits and made me feel unstoppable. Like I was being carried by the wind. It also drained my phone/camera battery so that I didn't have my camera on the best day of hiking we've had to date. The Roan Highlands are incredible. I have a shot of my tent site below. The following day was filled with 360 degree views of mountainous horizons. It was a special day. This whole trip is supremely special. It can't be said how satisfying it is to live out a dream. I have a really good feeling about where I am going. The future looks positively bright.
Hard to believe 31 days have passed. It has been a great month, a great challenge. I would say I'm slightly ahead of my personal goals. I am in great spirits and thirsty for more adventure. More challenges, more nature and more arrowheads! I can't wait to see what May will bring. I'm very excited about getting off trail for a weekend in Blacksburg. Man, I can taste it from here. Cheap beer and bar food. Maybe a small walk around campus. A stroll in the park.
I have currently lost 17 lbs.
Started at 212 and was 195 yesterday. My pack is probably around 33-35 lbs. Combined, its nearly 30 lbs lighter than when I was charging up the approach trail in GA.
Not bad.
I plan to take a day off (zero) in Damascus, VA, on Monday or Tuesday. It's time for a small break. May even buy a new pair of socks.

I am amazed by your journey! Your writing logs make for great reading...I see wonderful fodder for an article in OUTSIDE. I just read a stat: Each year, thousands of hikers attempt a thru-hike; only about one in four make it all the way. I totally believe, heart and soul, that you will make it...and write about it later. Enjoy your adventure! Erica and the Zoo
