Outdoor enthusiast. Hiking for the challenge, the thrill, the adventure. Looking to figure it all out. This is really just a personal journey, but thought some people would want to get involved and this is a good way to give back. I figured ... more

Day 92

PA - Mile 1260 - Jun 30th, 2015

Day 92
Time is speeding by. I can't believe I'm 92 days in. I have slowed my pace a bit to enjoy the scenery. To ride it out in a more leisurely style. Its been a great week. Although, hiking in liquor was probably a bit too much...
I'm committed to going big the next few days. Pushing hard into Jersey and then New York. This is probably my last chance to make big miles. The terrain finally opens up a bit.
Pennsylvania has been showing its teeth. The rocks here are brutal. There are half mile sections where you don't touch the ground, just rock-hop and scramble. Most of the time, with wet shoes or rain pouring down. Other times, PA is remarkable. We hike through fields, farms and fern gullies. The temps are great, at times even chilly. I've hiked at night a few times, but have really just been taking things as they come. Not worrying about miles. The hills are small and we hit towns every few days, so it breaks up hiking nicely. I bought new shoes, socks and shorts in Duncannon, PA and stayed in a cheap motel last night. I was told I didn't even look like a thru hiker.
My feet no longer hurt, my ankles are fine and I've still got a good feeling about everything. I'm in a good place.
The rain has been tough though. It makes everything slower, longer and more difficult. It weighs heavy on the psyche. Miles have been painstakingly slow. It begins to drain the spirit. I'd say it has rained at least once, everyday, the last ten days. And nearly every night. It makes living out here without a tent very challenging. But I know it's only temporary. I'm on the right track. The right path. I figure I'll buy a hammock in a few weeks.
I've been hiking with people the last two weeks. It's a radical change from my first 1100 miles, but I really enjoy the company. Everyone is so unique. Hikers are some of the best people on the planet. Locals too. It's everyone you encounter out here. I realized during the first half of this marathon that this journey is no longer a personal one. It is about how I relate to people. How relationships evolve. Its about who you meet, how you react and interact. That I can share this experience with all of you makes it our journey. Our story. This whole trip has taken on new meaning. I am evolving with it. I am adapting well. I am learning new levels of patience and discipline. At times, the lack there of. It is all necessary. All rewarding. I thrive on it.
There have been a lot of new faces on the trail. A lot of flip-floppers and Leap-froggers. People who are just starting out. Section hikers. I've helped a few get settled in and still see familiar friends and faces from throughout my 3 months on trail. I saw a guy yesterday that I hadn't seen since mile 35 or so. We both recognized eachother, sort of. It's been a lot of fun. This trail is never dull.
Black raspberries and blueberries are everywhere up here. They make for a delicious snack along the trail. Even had a handful of red raspberries today.
Rain or shine, the trail provides.
Be in touch soon,
Michelangelo

I am amazed by your journey! Your writing logs make for great reading...I see wonderful fodder for an article in OUTSIDE. I just read a stat: Each year, thousands of hikers attempt a thru-hike; only about one in four make it all the way. I totally believe, heart and soul, that you will make it...and write about it later. Enjoy your adventure! Erica and the Zoo
