Shut Inn Trail, Training Hike 4

Bent Creek State Park - Mile 10 - Jun 9th, 2015

This was my longest training hike yet - 10 miles. I will admit - it hurt. The last two miles were painful, which I would have dealt with if I brought along my "Vitamin I" (hiker code for Ibuprofen) but of course I left it in the car. Strange thing is though, as soon as I got to the car and rested for a few minutes, that pain passed and by the time I got home, I didn't even need to take anything. That just shows me I need to stop and take breaks more. I would have but it had really rained the night before and nothing was dry to sit on. At least when I have my full pack on in Vermont I'll have my roll up seat I can sit on when the ground is wet.
This trail was mildly difficult at some points, but mostly the real work was in the first hour as it was mega humid from the wet ground I was drenched in sweat just 30 minutes in. I got the "I don't know if I can do this today" line bouncing around in my head. Then I reminded myself about the kids - they don't have the luxury of not feeling the pain they are in - so I can hike. And that got me through the next 10 miles.
Lots of elevations and de-elevations which made it interesting. Narrow trails. Lots of use for my new trekking poles. Honestly I don't know how anyone hikes without them. Its like having 4 legs.
High points - getting through it.
Low points (several) - my first bear sighting on the way back. And of course it HAD to be a momma bear and cubs. I admit I froze. I do need to get better educated on what to do but I did remember reading that Momma's can get angry if they think the cubs are in danger so I just stood still. I was a ways away from them I don't think they noticed me, even though Momma probably did smell me coming. Momma was huge. I mean, like, huge. Part of my fear was assuaged by the cuteness of the cubs. One looked like an average cub and I swear the other one couldn't have been a few weeks old. Like I could have picked it up it was so small.
2nd low point - coming upon a lady hiker doing a squat to relieve herself at trails edge. Yikes. Hey, it happens I told her. I'm sure she was embarrassed.
3rd low point - the zip lock bad for my gorp busting. Luckily I was able to get it all into the pocket of my rain jacket, a nice makeshift gorp holder.
