Trail: Appalachian Trail     Goal: 2190 Miles
Dates: Mar 16 2017 - Aug 12 2017
As you see, I don't have a trail name (yet)... I thought about hiking the AT 20 years ago but it wasn't the right time. Now that I have the time, we'll see how my body will hold up. I have my own reasons driving me but it would be nice ... more

Fifty Percent Quit At This Point

Hot Springs - Mile 273 - Apr 8th, 2017

Most days I hike as hard and fast as I can to get from point A to point B. I take time for photos and stop to get water ... and when weather has permitted, I've even paused to enjoy a view. Today I hurried to get to point B and was making great time then I walked into a beautiful little area. The walk along the water, the waterfalls, the flora was incredibly peaceful. I spent longer on that half mile than I spent climbing the mountain to get there. Wish you could have been there...
Standing Bear Farm was a unique experience. You check in with your name. They give you an envelope. You write down your accommodations and the cost. They have a store with a plethora of items - prices displayed. Take whatever you want - just write down on your envelope what it was - the price - how many. When it's all said and done, you total everything up and then pay what you owe. No one watches. No one checks. There are no cameras. What there is ... TRUST! The belief in others. I can't say no one has ever taken advantage of the system but it seems to work which leads me to believe that people tend do the right thing. This doesn't surprise me though. Out here, people are different than they are in society. They are nice. They are friendly. They take care of each other. Before you say - that's how people are that I know, remember, these are ALL total strangers. If people in society treated each other with as much kindness, generosity and respect as strangers... strangers treat each other out here, the world would be a better place. I think it boils down to the fact that out here everyone is sharing the same struggle. We all recognize the difficulty we face daily. We share the suffering. Next time you see someone less fortunate, remember, there but for the Grace of God go I. A little kindness goes a long way.
Oh so COLD! Long hike in sleet/rain/snow mix. Started at 6AM - was pitch black for the first hour (except for my head lamp of course) and the lightly falling snow was pretty at the time. Then the winds picked up. Went across a true bald at 4700 feet - the snow went sideways- the wind was 40-45 mph and you had to walk sideways just so you wouldn't get blown over - definitely an experience/memory but not one I want to repeat. Been tucked in this shelter (Roaring Fork) for hours and the snow continues to fall. Tomorrow's hike will be interesting. Hopefully the weather will break some. Two days until Hot Springs!!! Have a group of people who are all looking to zero so it should be fun. Looking forward to a signal and finding out what's going on in your worlds 🙂.
I really thought I would have service today... no cigar. So there was around 3 inches of snow on the ground this morning and it was in the twenties - Yahoo! And then I climbed to the top of the mountain - there was 6 inches, the wind was howling and I had only thought I was cold before. Thankfully once you've reached the top you get to go down the other side. There is no snow here. It's cold and windy but I'm already in my sleeping bag staying warm. I here the weather is going to really improve in the next few days but I'm not worried about it. Why? Because I Nero tomorrow into Hot Springs and Zero the next day!!! Looking forward to clean clothes, a couple of showers, a beer - who's kidding who - beers and eating anything I want because there's no way I can consume as many calories as I burn daily. Also - I'll be able to watch the third AND final round of the tournament not to mention a few enjoyable phone calls. It's gonna be like a much needed vacation - whoo hoo! If the library is open I'll try to send a bunch of pictures. Sorry I haven't been able to post frequently but knowing you're all out there and staying interested means a lot so Thank You! Remember, Hot Springs is only mile 273 ... there are still 1917 miles to go. Probably why 50% will have dropped out by this point --- it's HARD!

Hey MacGyver, hope you made it to Rangeley already but if not, there's a great hiker hostel on Rte 4 called The Farmhouse. I stayed there last year on my way through and they have a B&B in the main house as well as a thru-hiker bunkhouse that I had a great evening with some NOBOs. Hang in there and hope your gear catches up with you before Monson! Hike on buddy!

Can't wait to see how you liked the Whites and especially the Presi's when you get through later this week. Hope your weather is as good as it has been in southern New England. That is a special area of New England to me! I know you are going to make to Katahdin so I already made my full donation NMSS, but I guess this site won't let me register it until you actually complete your hike. Hike on!

OK --- excuse me for interjecting, but I must say that each and every day brings a fresh beginning in every walk of life. New mercies every morning. Trey, I don't even know you - just met you once briefly, but the past is in the past, and it does not mold our futures. Forge ahead, my friend, forge ahead. Who knows what the day may bring? We all have regret, sorrows, trials and tribulations, but we also have abundant blessings and reassurance. Keep the faith, be courageous, and stand strong as your travel onward. I think I am hooked on following your path and reading your journals! Have a great weekend, and I hope you have pleasant weather!

Yes- I thought the same thing during Church!!! I don't believe it's a coincidence. I believe it's a blessing and a reassuring sign. When daddy had his brain surgery, he was sent to recover in room 316! His nurse's name happened to be Angel. Daddy and I spoke of such reassurance from God. It's not that I don't want you to go; rather we will miss you. However the worry and apprehension is lessened because of our faith! John 3:16
