As you see, I don't have a trail name (yet)... I thought about hiking the AT 20 years ago but it wasn't the right time. Now that I have the time, we'll see how my body will hold up. I have my own reasons driving me but it would be nice to help others along the way. My sister has Multiple Sclerosis - this is her story.
17 1/2 years ago... my life changed. I was a 29 year old married for almost 3 years. I went to sleep "normal" and woke up unable to use my right hand. Numbness continued to spread. Over the next several weeks there were Dr. visits, ER visits, x-rays, lab work, CT, spinal tap, and MRI of my brain. All were normal, but I could no longer shower or dress myself. My husband had to take on these tasks, and he did so lovingly! I could barely breathe due to a constricting feeling around my abdomen and neck. An electric sensation shot down my legs frequently. I had to sleep on ice packs because I could not tolerate heat. We had no answers. My husband and father were the only people that I felt believed my symptoms were real anymore.
Fortunately, I had a neurologist that believed me too. A c-spine MRI revealed demyelination. By this time, the Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis was a relief! I have had relapses over the years and continue with many invisible symptoms of this disease. My dad did his best to shelter me from stress for fear it would contribute to a relapse. Sadly I lost him 2 years ago.
March is MS awareness month. Google can provide disease information and statistics, however I hope a glimpse into my life personalizes your awareness.
Since my diagnosis, I have been blessed with 3 incredible sons. My life is full of blessings.
I didn't ask her if I could use her story but I don't think she will mind. I appreciate the people in my life who want to follow me on my trip. Just the fact that you care and want to be a part of my journey means more than you can know. If by some chance anyone else wants to follow along, you are welcome. If the story of my sister touched you, your life has been impacted by MS or you just want to help others, then I hope you will donate to this worthy cause.
Thank You All! less

Overwhelmed
Tumbling Run - Mile 1073 - Jun 3rd, 2017
6/3 - I'm pretty tired... I called a Hostel to make sure they have room Monday night - mainly so I can do laundry. That's some boring information... I'm in Pennsylvania! Crossed the Mason-Dixon Line ... so I'm amongst them now... hope they're friendly! I have some people I need to thank too. First, Ellyson - thank you so much for your kind, humbling words... it means a lot to know you are still following along! I hiked with a girl today named Kate. She doesn't have a trail name yet because it's only her fourth day out. We had a great day and I think she was proud (and sore) when we finished. More importantly, I think she was happy. She said she was a little down the night before but I could tell tonight that her spirits were up... it wasn't me ... I think she might read this and she knows where the credit goes - which brings me to Pam.
I was running low on food so I got up early to walk 2 miles into Smithsburg ... the road was really busy the night before so maybe someone will stop and give me a ride - no such luck - it's Saturday. No worries, it's an easy down hill and I make great time. I get to the Dollar General (by now I know what they offer because their in every hiker town) as they open and I run into a chatty/sweet young lady who works there. She tells me all about what's going on in her world and I listen while I shop... she was happy and from her story --- happy to be alive. I didn't think much more about it - just that she was nice and that I had to get to the trail. I'm in front of the store sorting thru my food and re packing my back pack - people come in and out - some speak, some ask if I'm hiking - one lady in particular says she'll pray for me.... a few minutes later the same lady pulls back into the parking lot and says God told her to turn around and come pray with me - would I mind? You all know I need all the help I can get! I told her thank you, I would be happy to pray with her but she'd be a True Saint if she'd drive me the 2 miles back up the hill ðŸ˜. We talked on the ride... she was so nice - a retired nurse... she and her husband operate a farm to help autistic children... turns out she plays scrabble with Dr. Ben Carson... who was the Doctor for her daughter who may have lost her life without his help... the same happy girl I spoke with in the Dollar General! We did pray - she prayed for me ... I thanked her and gave her a hug... as I walked away into the cover of the woods it was hard to fight back the tears as they rolled down my cheeks... how overwhelmed I am by the kindness and love bestowed upon me during this journey by you all .. how humbling it is and how blessed I am.. it was easy to lift up Kate's spirits today - but it wasn't me.

Hey MacGyver, hope you made it to Rangeley already but if not, there's a great hiker hostel on Rte 4 called The Farmhouse. I stayed there last year on my way through and they have a B&B in the main house as well as a thru-hiker bunkhouse that I had a great evening with some NOBOs. Hang in there and hope your gear catches up with you before Monson! Hike on buddy!

Can't wait to see how you liked the Whites and especially the Presi's when you get through later this week. Hope your weather is as good as it has been in southern New England. That is a special area of New England to me! I know you are going to make to Katahdin so I already made my full donation NMSS, but I guess this site won't let me register it until you actually complete your hike. Hike on!

OK --- excuse me for interjecting, but I must say that each and every day brings a fresh beginning in every walk of life. New mercies every morning. Trey, I don't even know you - just met you once briefly, but the past is in the past, and it does not mold our futures. Forge ahead, my friend, forge ahead. Who knows what the day may bring? We all have regret, sorrows, trials and tribulations, but we also have abundant blessings and reassurance. Keep the faith, be courageous, and stand strong as your travel onward. I think I am hooked on following your path and reading your journals! Have a great weekend, and I hope you have pleasant weather!

Yes- I thought the same thing during Church!!! I don't believe it's a coincidence. I believe it's a blessing and a reassuring sign. When daddy had his brain surgery, he was sent to recover in room 316! His nurse's name happened to be Angel. Daddy and I spoke of such reassurance from God. It's not that I don't want you to go; rather we will miss you. However the worry and apprehension is lessened because of our faith! John 3:16
