I'm Kenny, interested in exploring nature while helping others.
My friend lived in Tanzania for over a year and worked in tandem with an entrepreneurial physical therapist local to the area (Moshi, near Kilimanjaro) named Shedrack. Shedrack established his own physical therapy clinic called EPT (more info can be found here: http://moshiept.or.tz). In a nutshell, EPT provides therapy to disabled individuals who are discharged from hospitals due to lack of resources. These individuals still need serious help to function. Often these individuals are heads-of-the-household. Because they are still physically limited after being discharged, they are not able to work to put food on the table. EPT 's goal is to help these individuals gain independence so they can not only go back to work and make money for their families, but to enjoy the simple pleasures in life and know they will not be a burden on their loved ones.
100 % of the money raised for this organization will be given directly to Shedrack, founder and physical therapist at EPT. Shedrack will be using this money to purchase wheelchairs (which cost nearly $200 each, equivalent to 2.5 months worth of income of an average Tanzanian), new equipment to treat stroke victims and updating old equipment. There is a waitlist to be able to
get treated by practitioners at EPT. An important note: it has been made clear that these donations will not be used for operational costs, such as wages for employees or day to day functions around the clinic. The money is being used to improve the infrastructure and resources of the clinic, a strategy to make the clinic a sustainable and efficient healthcare resource in Moshi.
I chose to raise money for this organization because I know the money will be given directly to Shedrack with no administrative fees. Our money will go farther per dollar raised for a Tanzanian organization than it will for an American organization receiving equivalent donations because of administrative fees. Transparency is important as well-we know what the money will be used for. Also, EPT 's mission is an under-utilized service that needs more attention, even in the USA.
For a more detailed description of how effectively your money will be used and about Shedrack's story, please check out my friend's blog: https://thisblogisalexs.wordpress.com/2017/12/03/profile-shedrack/
On my hiker profile, I am hiking for "None" because Hikefor.com cannot give to EPT directly. We are choosing to by-pass the middle men (Non-profits who usually take a processing fee) and funding the clinic directly. Every dollar goes to Shedrack and EPT.
Please consider donating .$25-.50 for each mile of the 85 miles I will hike.
Thank you for your consideration and sponsorship,
Kenny F. less
