Frequently Asked Questions

Why? Just why?
- Because. Just because.
You're going by yourself!?
- Yes and no. I will be arriving by myself. But there will be about 5 million other people on the trail at the same time. So I will not be alone. Also, I find that if I want to do things, I can't wait for other people. If I do, I'll never get to do those things.
Are you bringing a gun?
- LOL, no.
Aren't you afraid of [all the things]?
- Nope. The stuff we all do every day is more dangerous than what the trail has to offer. It only seems more dangerous because the trail has a different set of risks than what we're used to ignoring. All life is risk. Being safe is about being mindful, and managing risks with precautions.
Where will you get food?
- The trail is not far from towns. You get food for the trail just like you do at home. At the store. Sometimes its easier to get specific food and supplies mailed to you from family at home. Just have it mailed to the local post office of whatever town you're going to be in next.
What if it rains?
- Then I'll get wet.
What if you hurt yourself?
- Then I'll say ouch, then do what I need to do to fix it. For injuries that require not walking in order to heal, we have days we call "Zeroes". That is, a day of rest and reorganization. Zeroes can happen in a town, or while camping on the trail. An injury that keeps me from hiking for the rest of the season means I'll go home and try again next year.
What if you DIE!?
- Well, I imagine I'll be briefly surprised and annoyed, and will soon cease to care much. If it happens, I'll try to let you know how it turns out.
