In 2010 I accidentally became a long distance hiker when my one month hike on the Appalachian Trail turned into a 6 month thru-hike. This year, in honor of my 5 year anniversary, I am once again walking the AT - and - raising money for the children ... more

A bit of heaven and hell

Hot Springs, NC - Mile 270 - Apr 12th, 2015

270 Miles into the Trail and am taking a nero (only 3 miles on the trail today) in Hot Springs, NC. I am very much needing a recoup day. Hot Springs is a wonderful trail town, the AT goes right down Main Street. It is also the home of a mineral bath spa where I will be soaking later this afternoon. I am also getting a facial - the Trail isn't kind to aging skin. Eating lots of real food while in town, took a long hot shower and doing laundry (it has been over a week since the last time) and sleeping in a bed tonight. Ah, the delights of town.
For the past week I have been hiking with Moment, Hip, and Salmon. We pushed through the Smokies in 5 1/4 days - hiking through 2 days of solid rain. Everything was soaked - clothes, boots, packs, and nothing could dry out. I actually took refugee in the shelter 2 nights instead of pitching my tent in the rain. Shelters are good in that you are under cover, bad in that they are dirty and home to the mice. The woman sleeping next to me had one run across here face during the night. There were 18 of us inside the shelter one night, so we were packed in like sardines. But on our final day, the sun can out, the wet gear hanging off the back of the packs dried and all was well.
The past few days have been beautiful weather and spring has sprung in the south. Woodland Trillium, Trout Lilly, wild Lilly of the Valley, violets, and other forest wild flowers now grace the trail. I find my spirits shift quickly and when the sun is shining the trail is a beautiful place. But even on the cold, wet, rainy days there is a subtle beauty to the woods that I find soothing to my soul.
I wish I could report that my feet are happy - they are not. I was doing fine until 2 days of hiking in wet boots and now I have all sorts of blisters, raw skin on the bottom of feet, and other assorted foot aches. I also have been doing long distances - 15-17 miles daily, and that has been too much for my feet. I need to cut back to under 15 if these feet are going to make it to Maine.
I am staying at Elmer's Sunnybank Inn tonight - stayed here 5 years ago - and when I got in Elmer commented that I had a ton of mail. Deepest thanks to the Chickadees from Mountain Road School who sent me hand made cards, to my dear friend Satyena for the card and gifts, and to Guido's. I am a Trail Ambassador for Guido's and they are sending me delicious and sustaining goodies. So shop there if you can.
Love to you and please keep sending emails or cards. Despite my wonderful trail friends, I do miss you all.

Hi Seeker, Well done. The school is fortunate to have you on their side. As tough as it was to end your hike, it sounds as if you have come to terms with it. When it comes to " Hike your own hike " you did a great job.

Hello Joanna!
So nice to see you at Mountain Road this past weekend. Our many festivities -- especially the groundbreaking for "The Pines" -- were infinitely enriched by your presence. Thank you so much for taking a break from your hike to join us!
Here's a nice little writeup in the Chatham Courier about that groundbreaking...

Self understanding and awareness come in small portions without fan fare. This is wisdom. See? Maybe not an epiphany in the traditional sense but no less profound. I am sorry I didn't get to see more of you during your visit home but the best news is that for me, you are always here. See you soon.

Hi Joanna, My brother took us through Luray Caverns last year on our trip back from the storytelling festival in Jonesboro, Tennessee--agree they are magnificent!

Hi Joanna, I've been with the Red Foxes this week while Jon enjoys the Maui Sufi camp... Read them your response to their letters--they loved hearing from you and many vowed they wanted to make the hike someday. They wanted to know when you would be finished the trail...
Sorry I will miss you (and Acknowledgements Day and Pastoral Pastimes!) as Don and I leave for Bali on the 8th with our Tara Dhatu group. Looking forward to that of course but sorry to miss these at MRS. It's been fun to be there this week!
Happy hiking & lots of love

Hey Joanna!

Any idea approximately when you'll be coming through Boiling Springs? I haven't forgotten my Kripalu sister. I'll be in Indianapolis with my elderly parents June 1-12. If I'm away, I can still let you use my house and will let you know how to get in. What kind of beer/food shall I leave for you if I'm not around? :-) Hope to see you, though. Many blessings, Carol

Joanna, it is so good to get your posts and know you are making such good progress and are with good friends. Glad you and your feet have forged a truce. You can't do it without them. Best wishes for more great hiking. We have good news too. If you remember Bernie had a lot of trouble walking. He finally had bypass surgery on his right leg and can walk better than in years. He is almost fully healed and already enjoying his new found freedom. Don't think we'll doing the AT any time soon but I'll be glad if he can do High Falls. Love to you.

Thanks for your update, Joanna, I look forward to them. Today in our hallway, Daisy (unprompted by anybody) pointed out your location on the map to her classmates as they waited in line to go outside. She was so happy and proud to share your progress. And I am so happy and proud to know you! May your trails be smooth and your blisters too!

J, so glad you made it so far and are getting a rest.

Just sent you an email before I read this entry. Was concerned about your feet and so sorry that are not in good shape.

For some reason the link in your email doesn't work on my kindle fire so when I get an email I google you. Am going to bookmark this and see if that will work. Take care of those feet. Maybe you need spare boots. I know that's extra weight but might be worth it.

Best wishes for successful continuation.

Hi Joanna:
The Chickadees (led by Daisy) were assembled around the Appalaccian Trail map we have on our wall, looking at where you started, how far you've gone in two days, and how impressively long your journey will be. It was so adorable and so sweet. We are definitely thinking of you! ~~Anne
