My name is Jeff Hill from York, SC and I've been planning a thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail since April 2014. I was still active duty in the United States Marine Corps at this time and decided after my enlistment there would be no better time to ... more

The NOC, Week Three 'Mar 15 - Mar 21'

The NOC, NC - Newfound Gap, TN - Mile 210 - Mar 21st, 2015

March 15th - Day 15
I had a decent nights sleep for the first time in awhile. Instead of sleeping in the shelter, I set up the tent where there was no snoring or mice to deal with. An amateur mistake I made was leaving a 2 inch opening in the door of my tent. One would think, maybe you might get a bug or two by morning...NOPE. At least 25 to 30 small centipedes made their way inside and found a new home. Lesson learned. The rest of the day was spent as zero day at the NOC.
March 16th - Day 16
We hiked out of the NOC which was 8 miles uphill and then hiked up Jacobs Ladder which was 700 ft. in elevation within half a mile. Jacobs Ladder is a very impressive hill that keeps you guessing where and how far until it ends. Overall, we hiked 16 miles to Brown Fork Gap Shelter, NC, and almost all of it was uphill. It was a very draining day and I began chaffing pretty bad.
March 17th - Day 17
Today we hiked 12.7 miles to the Fontana Dam Shelter, NC aka the “Fontana Hilton.” It was almost all downhill so my knees are fairly sore. We did get some trail magic today from the Fresh Ground Leapfrog Cafe. Fresh Ground is a past thru-hiker who leapfrogs towns along the trail to provide trail magic to current thru-hikers. Afterwards, Clockwise and myself decided to stay at the shelter but spent majority of the day trying to get shuttled into town to see 4 and 5 at their hotel room at the Fontana Lodge. They let us use their shower which was the first shower I’ve felt did a complete and thorough job. I was not looking forward to going back to the shelter. While there, we printed our backcountry permits for The Smoky Mountains. The permits cost $20 and allows you to hike The Smokies in an 8 day limit. Unlike other parts of the trail, dogs are prohibited in The Smokies. The hikers with pets are having to pay a hefty amount ($250-350) to kennel and shuttle their animals around The National Park.
March 18th - Day 18
It was an unwanted zero day in Fontana. What we thought would just be a quick resupply from the General Store turned into a complete town malfunction and everything went down. This included their entire town’s network of ATM’s, cash registers, internet/wifi, etc. By the time we got back to the trailhead, half the day was gone and it made more sense just to leave early the next morning.
March 19th - Day 19
It was an awful day to start out in The Smokies. We hiked 16.7 miles to Spence Field Shelter, NC. The temperature was somewhere in the mid 20’s with rain so as soon as I got to the shelter I pretty much disappeared into the sleeping bag.
March 20th - Day 20
I took a major mental push to get up and out of the shelter this morning. We had a 12.3 mile hike to Siler’s Bald Shelter, TN with similar weather as yesterday with slightly less intense rain, and there weren't really any good views. There were lots and lots of weekenders, college spring breakers, and day hikers out in The Smokies who seemed like they truly regretted coming out.
March 21st - Day 21
Today I used the camera more than any other day on the trail during our 15.5 mile hike to Icewater Spring Shelter. The cold rain subsided and the sun came out to warm us back up finally. Surprisingly, I was able to get within 4-5 feet of a deer, experience the views of Clingman’s Dome on a bright and clear day, and received lots of trail magic from some older ladies at Newfound Gap, TN. I also met and explained to other day hikers my goal of completing my thru-hike to Katahdin. The craziest thing was that 5 minutes before Newfound Gap, on the trail, you would think that you’ve never been so secluded in the woods, but only half a mile later coming into Newfound Gap you’ll find its heavily populated with day hikers and tourists. There are hundreds of people and tons of vehicles with non stop traffic. Its hard to believe you were so secluded at one point.
Total mileage thus far: 210.3

Thought of you, Jeff...as I read the following verse. The reference to the "tent" brought your face to my mind... got me thinking that as you hike and see God's creation each day...what a marvelous time in your life. I pray you relish, absorb it and give God the glory for All that He has done in your life and at this time of your life as you take each step in your journey---I pray that you recognize HIs voice as you personally witness the wind through the trees, the birds sing their praises to the One who created them and provides for them each day. I pray you see God through His works on the trails and mountains you will climb today, tomorrow and the next day---for that is why we are all here, to give honor, praise and glory to the Alpha/Omega, the beginning/the end, the all knowing, all seeing, ever present God who craves our attention and our relationship with Him....so much so that He came as a man. xoxoxox--Aunt Missy

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (‭Psalm‬ ‭19‬:‭1-14‬ ESV)

Praying and Thinking of you!! If you through KY, I can bring you socks!!! ;0)

A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” A voice says, “Cry!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. (‭Isaiah‬ ‭40‬:‭3-11‬ ESV)

Jeff, wishing you the very best of luck on your upcoming journey. As much as this trip is an adventure that will test your strength and personal will, I have to say I'm impressed with your selfless desire to help others in the process. Congrats to you for making this a reality as I know you've worked hard for a long time and have been patient in the process. You've earned this opportunity to explore our lands and reflect on this great nation you helped protect. Remember, wave to the cars when walking over I-70 in MAryland and call upon me at anytime!
