Butter Gap / Cat Gap Loop
Pisgah Ranger District - Mile 0 - Jul 29th, 2018
I decided to arrange all my practice hikes in an attempt to complete the Carolina Mountain Club "Pisgah 400" challenge. The goal is to hike all 400 miles of trail on their list. Most of which are on National Geographic Trails Map 780.
Scott and I logged just under 16 miles this trip.Lessons learned on this outing:
1. My DYI rain jacket was a complete failure! I spent a few weeks gathering supplies like water resistant zippers, a pattern, pattern paper, etc. Then took an old silnylon tarp and started sewing. This thing was pretty awesome. I put in pit zips, elastic at the wrist, hood ties, seam sealed every seam but the water just soaked through the fabric. Now I'm looking at a few jackets from the following sites: lightheartedgear.com or antigravitygear.com. Super light and super reliable.
2. Always and I mean ALWAYS take phone video or pics with the phone horizontal. My head was in the 35mm/DSLR mode where I could take pics in either position. Not a good idea when most of the viewers are looking at them on a mobile device. Here is my first attempt at making a trail video. https://youtu.be/trpxB7KEea8
