Erin Rodman

Trail: John Muir Trail     Goal: 211 Miles
Dates: Jul 11 2016 - Jul 30 2016
Excitedly preparing to live out my dream of through-hiking a long distance trail, reflecting upon those who have helped make it possible, and seeking to give back. As a pregnant teen, my story could easily have become a statistic. But Fristers ... more

Clocks a tickin'

The countdown truly begins...
4 weeks, 4 days...
The last gear pieces are being bought, the audiobooks downloaded, the transportation arranged, it's getting more real as each day passes!
After my last backpacking trip in the Los Padres National Forest, I came back with an ongoing pain in my right knee.
I finally went to the doctor (which I avoid at all costs)...I figured I actually HAD to take care of myself this time!
I was diagnosed with....patellafemoral pain syndrome!
As good news as it could have been, not an issue with the bone, ligaments, or any danger of injury.
Just need to improve my body mechanics by strengthening certain muscles.
I was a little worried, and spent all of May limping around between physical therapy sessions. I've been super diligent with my exercises to improve the mechanics and after only 2 and a half weeks I have seen a complete turn around! I am thankful this issue arose before rather than during my hike! I've been able to resolve the issue at it's root! I am continuing my therapy but am ready to go out on a couple shake down hikes.
1. to test my gear
2. to spend time at altitude
3. just get more in shape!
This weekend I'll be hiking to the top of Mt. San Bernardino, elevation 10,840', sleeping on top, and returning the following day.
The following weekend will be Mt. San Gorgonio, elevation 11,503'. Again, summiting, sleeping, and descending.
Wish me luck!
